Smart Spending

This Monday, July 15th, I went to the Kiddie Academy in Lewisville, Texas and taught 2 classes of 30 kids each about the importance of spending intelligently, specifically buying needs before wants. Firstly, we reviewed what we learned in last class: spending, wants, and needs. To ensure they understood, we played a quick game where I showed images of items like groceries, water, or chocolate and asked whether it was a want or a need. Next, we played a game where the children were split into groups of 5, given 25 dollars of fake money, and shown a list of items with prices. Their objective was to use the money to buy whatever they wanted from the list. This activity was meant to reinforce the fact that buying needs takes priority over wants and to only buy wants after the needs have been bought. Lastly, I quizzed the students on what we had learned in class today, and rewarded those who answered with stickers.
